Club Spotlight: Jefferson's Fashion Concept Club

By Emilie Zuccato

Last Spring semester, Sierra Kennedy and I founded the Fashion Concept Club. As third-year fashion merchandising majors, the goal was to create a space where creativity could be used in collaborative projects that expand on different skill sets. The club hopes to grow internally within the various majors of Jefferson and externally to reach out to creative groups in other schools.

Fashion Concept Club allows members to engage in roles ranging from marketing and styling to creative directing and designing. The group collectively decides on a concept for a fashion photoshoot inspired by mood boards created by group members. There are also opportunities to volunteer as a model or practice photography and editing for the photo shoot.

The designers' goal is to make clothes that represent and tell a story using recycled fabric and clothing items. The stylists of the group are in charge of the details of the completed outfits. This includes hair, makeup, accessories, and the addition of clothes that accentuate the designers’ work. The creative directors work together to develop a cohesive story representing the shoot's concept. This story-telling aspect is achieved through the photoshoot location, props, posing, and editing styles. The marketers work throughout the semester to promote the shoot, different fundraisers and to release interest forms for photographers, models, etc. They help us shoot content and share what we do!

Last spring semester was the first time the club tried out ideas for the club, and the results were thrilling! FCC had the amazing opportunity to work with the Tyler School of Art photography club at Temple, where the ideas were photographed by Temple’s practicing club members. This was great for networking with students in other schools and majors and opening the door for Jefferson and Temple students to collaborate in the future. This project also allowed students from both clubs to practice skills, work well in a team, and build portfolios.

The first shoot was based on the concept of “Dystopian Technology.” Creative directors created the story: “Models are portrayed as slaves to technology, their faces illuminated by the glow of screens as they mindlessly scroll through social media feeds or engage in virtual reality simulations. The shoot explores themes of addiction, escapism, and the erosion of human connection in an increasingly digital world”.

Fashion Concept Club's project with Temple Photography Club

Although not everyone who worked on this project could go to Temple for the shoot, it was amazing to see the collaborative creativity of FCC come to life. The space that has been created encourages students to get out of their comfort zone, experiment with new interests, and feel comfortable building upon skills they already have. It is essential to work with students in other majors and apply knowledge from classes to a fun and low-pressure project. The Fashion Concept Club is excited to continue and cannot wait to see the next photoshoot! Stay tuned!
