Jefferson Volleyball Digs for Pink

By Samuel Bass

The Jefferson Women’s Volleyball team defeated Holy Family University in straight sets Wednesday evening. The Rams, who hosted the Tigers on Breast Cancer Awareness night, held off multiple comeback efforts during each set and handily beat HFU for the second time this season.

Jefferson started the match locked up with Holy Family through the first six points. After a bit of a run, the Rams knotted the score back at 13 apiece, but eventually pulled away to take the first set, 25-17.

Jefferson won the first nine points of the second set and thwarted Holy Family comeback efforts to win the second set rather easily, 25-15. In the third set, HFU came out swinging, going on a 10-3 run. Jefferson then tied it up, 11-11. The Rams and Tigers then exchanged points before Jefferson took five of the last six points to win the set 25-18 and sweep the match.

“Being able to pull out a 3-0 sweep against [Holy Family] for the second time this season feels really good,” said junior outside hitter Aja Smith. Smith contributed six kills in the win, continuing her stellar season.

The women's volleyball team groups together before finishing off their first set.

Jess Molen, the CACC’s reigning player of the year, led the Rams with nine kills to go along with eight digs. Cameron Johnson contributed 16 digs and four assists. Sam Mann posted two blocks as well.

Molen continues her phenomenal season despite being held out of some matches due to injury. Her kill per set exceeds her total from her first season, and is very close to getting back to what it was a season ago when she was the conference's top player.

As a whole, the Rams improve to 11-7 (8-0 CACC) and 4-1 at home. Jefferson has a little over a week off before they travel to New Jersey to square off with Georgian Court, then returning home to play host to Post on Saturday. “We have a lot of competition coming up,” Smith said, “I’m hoping we can keep our undefeated streak alive.”
