#TeamSeas

By Sarine Kaprielian

Jimmy Donaldson, known by the world as Mr. Beast on Youtube, can tend to be the first person that comes to mind when thinking of generosity. He has committed numerous acts of kindness such as giving people cars, giving away millions of dollars, and donating presents to children’s hospitals around the country just to name a few. Now he has created a new way to help the world by starting a new mission called Team Seas, a collaboration with Mark Rober to remove millions of pounds of trash from the ocean. This comes as no surprise because he is already very philanthropic due in large part to his generosity to people in his communities, and by starting his own food bank to help the less fortunate. He also did something similar in 2019 with Mark Rober called “Team Trees' ' during which every dollar donated equaled one tree being planted in the world; they exceeded their goal of 20 million trees.

The goal of Team Seas is to remove 30 million pounds of trash in the ocean by 2022. Every time someone donates a dollar, that's one pound of trash that they remove from the ocean. This is a very much needed cause and it could not have come at a better time. Every year, 17.6 billion pounds of plastic are dumped into the ocean each year which is equivalent to 57,000 blue whales. This means that by the year 2050, the ocean will have more plastic than fish. 30 million may not seem like a life-changing amount when looking at those statistics, but it is a significant start. Team Seas will be involved in cleaning oceans, beaches, and rivers. Along with plastic, abandoned fishing gear is some of the deadliest trash in the ocean. Specially trained experts will be working to remove as much fishing gear from the oceans and dispose of them as well as plastic. Team Seas will also work with Ocean Conservancy and its partners to remove millions of pounds of plastic and trash from beaches all around the world. They will also send professional crews to clean up some of the most iconic, vulnerable ocean spaces. Then, they will work with local authorities to make sure the trash is properly disposed of. Rivers cause a lot of pollution; research shows that one thousand rivers emit 80 percent of the pollution from rivers which is only 1 percent of rivers globally. The trash collected by Team Seas from the rivers will be brought to shore to be properly disposed of by local waste management.

It cannot be stressed enough: helping the environment is crucial to the longevity of this planet. Mr. Beast has revolutionized the way people make content by going above and beyond, and hopefully he is also inspiring people to take action towards important issues like climate change and a clean ecosystem. The goal of 30 million is already over halfway completed with $16.3 million already donated. If you are interested in donating, click this link: https://teamseas.org/
