The Resurgence of Concert Culture

By Faith Eckley

Concerts have been a staple in pop culture for decades, and it is no different in 2023. This past year, many major artists have gone on tour, including Taylor Swift, Drake and 21 Savage, SZA, Ed Sheeran, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beyonce, and the Jonas Brothers. According to The Wall Street Journal article “Concerts Were Wiped Out During Covid-19. Here’s When They Could Come Back,” concerts were put to a halt during the pandemic, putting the live music industry on pause and leaving people wondering if concerts would ever be possible again. Now in 2023, concerts have made their way back into the entertainment world.

Time reflected on the Eras Tour’s impact on the economy, which was projected to have sold over $1 billion in North American ticket sales. Tourism has also aided the economy, since people have paid thousands of dollars for travel expenses, hotels, food, and outfits. Major cities like New York City, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Los Angeles strive to host concerts like Swift’s for benefits like increased sales at local businesses, new job creations, and overall strengthening of the city brand.

Concerts also greatly impact culture, since music is a way for people to come together and share the wonderful experience of passionate and talented musicians. Both locals and tourists get the chance to make memories and enjoy experiences that will leave them with a positive outlook on these cities.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers Tour amazed the audience at the Hershey Park Stadium.

“[Tate McRae’s] September performance was fantastic. My friend and I had a great time,” said sophomore Kelly Nguyen.

This year, I have attended the Eras Tour, Ed Sheeran’s Mathematics Tour, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers Tour. Each concert was incredible. Swift sang hit after hit for over three hours with a full production including confetti, fireworks, dancing, and outfit changes. Sheeran gave a 360 degree performance while recording his beats using a live loop station. The Red Hot Chili Peppers gave a high energy, rocking performance with their range of songs from funk rock hit “Give it Away” to “The Zephyr Song.” This group also featured amazing jam sessions between their talented lead guitarist John Frusciante and iconic lead bassist Flea.

Now, more and more people are fortunate to be able to experience these incredible and surreal concerts, especially after not knowing if live music would be the same as the pre-pandemic times. Concerts are projected to continue throughout this year, a positive for the economy and pop culture.
